Google Adwords
Google Adwords are paid advertisements for your website. Google shows these Adwords on the top right of the browser screen. They are marked by the word 'advertisement'. – Such paid advertisements are commonly called Pay-Per-Click campaigns because you do not pay until someone actually clicks on your advertisement.

Adwords in principle work very simple: You determine for which search terms the advertisement for your website will be shown. Google then calculates a price you have to pay per click on your advertisement. The most important factors of this price calculation include:
- languages and countries for which you advertisement should appear
- the frequency with which the terms are being searched
- the number of competitors for these terms
- the competitors' bids
This sounds simpler than it actually is because you not only have to find the correct search terms (i.e. the ones with which interested users search for your products or services) but you also have to distinguish whether someone e.g. wants to have a product for free or to buy it second-hand or is looking for instruction manuals or experience reports. Especially if there is a strong competition for the search terms (i.e. the costs per click are high) sophisticated strategies are needed to avoid unnecessary costs.
Also very important is the correct, customer oriented wording of your Adwords advertisement. Describe precisely what you offer … otherwise you may obtain too many clicks from people looking for something entirely different. At least as important: Implement the target pages on which surfers land after clicking on your advertisement to gear as exactly as possible towards the interests of these surfers. E.g. make orientation as simple as possible. – And last but not least: Evaluate your log files to understand who comes to your website by which search terms. You even better employ a user tracking system telling you exactly where your website's visitors are going (also on multiple visits), where they may have 'stumbled' across something or broke off … and optimize according to these insights.
