If a user enters one of these search terms, the search engine displays this booked ad beside the 'normal' results. Very well known are Google AdWords or Overture by Yahoo.

Fees are calculated according to the number of clicks on these advertisements, where the price of a single click is determined by a bidding system. The place where an ad shows up depends on the bid.

These systems are working very well, and user acceptance is high.

For medium and long terms classical search engine optimization is often more effective and also cheaper, especially for informative websites. But mainly for shops good pay-per-click campaigns normally lead to better results. Ideally, both methods are combined.
