The principle of Adwords is very simple: you specify the search keys (or terms) that should cause your website's advertisement to be displayed. Google then calculates a price that you pay for each click on your ad. The most important factors in this price calculation are:

  • Languages and countries in which the advertisement is to appear
  • Frequency at which the keys (terms) are sought
  • Number of competitors for the keys (terms)
  • Bids by competitors


This sounds easier than it actually is. You must not only think of the right search terms (i.e. those which interested parties would use to find your products and services). You also need to figure out whether someone would like to receive a product as a gift, buy a used product, or obtain an instruction manual or reports on a product. Sophisticated strategies are needed to avoid unnecessary costs, especially when competition for the search term is strong (i.e. high cost per click).

Also very important is the right, customer-oriented text in the Adwords ad. Write down exactly what you offer ... otherwise you might get too many clicks from people looking for something entirely different. At least as important: the pages presented to surfers after they click on your advertisement should address the surfers' interests as closely as possible. Make orientation as easy as possible, for instance. And last but not least: evaluate your log files so you can see who arrives at your website via which search keys. Better yet, employ  user tracking which tells you exactly which paths visitors have taken to arrive at your site (also in the case of multiple visits), including where they perhaps "stumble" or abandon the visit ... and optimize your measures on the basis of these findings.
